What does router remote management mean, and should it be switched off?

Answer first

It lets you into the router settings from outside your home. Most people do not need it, and it is worth switching off.

Remote management means the router’s settings page can be reached from outside your home. If you do not use it, switch it off.

The risk is direct. The settings page is visible on the internet, and anyone who knows the password or finds an unfixed fault in the device can get in.

In the FBI’s 2025 notice, remote management was the common factor in some of the routers that had been broken into. Those were also devices the manufacturer no longer updated.

Switching it off does not affect anything you do at home. You can still reach the settings from inside the house.
