How do I know if my device gets updates?

The answer

Check the smart device's model on the manufacturer's support page and in its own settings. An updated phone or control app does not prove that the device itself receives fixes.

Separate three kinds of update

The phone operating system, control app and smart device software update separately. One being current tells you nothing about the other two.

Android lists the phone version, security update and Google Play system update separately. An iPhone system update is under Settings > General > Software Update.

An update from Google Play or the App Store is also separate from the update for the bulb, lock or camera itself.

Check the smart device itself

Search the manufacturer’s support site using the exact model number. A product’s marketing name may cover several different models.

An old update date is a reason to check, but it does not prove that support has ended. Look for the manufacturer’s lifecycle page, support schedule or confirmation from support.

Before you buy the next one, ask how long support lasts. Without that information you cannot know how long security problems found later will be fixed.
