When the phone rings and somebody talks about security
Three steps, in this order.
- Write down the company's name. Ask for the caller's name and Y-tunnus (Finnish Business ID) as well.
- End the call. Say:
I don't buy anything over the phone. Send me the offer in writing.
Then you can hang up. - Check it calmly before you buy anything. Find the company's number yourself and call it. Do not use the number from the call or message.
Never give these to anybody
- Your online banking credentials. Not to a bank, the police or anybody else.
- Your card number or the three digits on the back.
- Remote access, unless you contacted the support service yourself.
- A bank, authority or support caller asks for payment by gift card.
Urgency and demands for secrecy are common warning signs of fraud.
A contract made in a phone sale does not bind you unless you accept the written offer afterwards. Exceptions: phone and internet subscriptions, and calls you asked for.
