The first is for a fridge door or beside the phone. The second is for passing on when somebody asks you for advice.

When the phone rings and somebody talks about security

Three steps, in this order.

  1. Write down the company's name. Ask for the caller's name and Y-tunnus (Finnish Business ID) as well.
  2. End the call. Say: I don't buy anything over the phone. Send me the offer in writing. Then you can hang up.
  3. Check it calmly before you buy anything. Find the company's number yourself and call it. Do not use the number from the call or message.

Never give these to anybody

  • Your online banking credentials. Not to a bank, the police or anybody else.
  • Your card number or the three digits on the back.
  • Remote access, unless you contacted the support service yourself.
  • A bank, authority or support caller asks for payment by gift card.

Urgency and demands for secrecy are common warning signs of fraud.

A contract made in a phone sale does not bind you unless you accept the written offer afterwards. Exceptions: phone and internet subscriptions, and calls you asked for.

When somebody asks you for advice

Give them these three questions. They work against any sales pitch.

  1. What problem does this solve?
  2. How do I know I have that problem?
  3. What happens if I buy nothing?

Say these out loud

  • Ending a call is not rude.
  • You do not owe anybody a reason for saying no.
  • Never give your online banking credentials to anybody.
  • Only allow remote access to a support service you contacted yourself.
  • If something already happened, acting quickly helps more than shame.

If something already went wrong

  1. Call the bank. Use the number on the back of the card, not one from a message.
  2. Report the crime at a police station. The online form requires strong electronic identification accepted by the service.
  3. End the remote connection and change passwords on another device.
  4. Tell someone you trust who can help with the next steps.

If the answers remain unclear, do not buy anything during the call.
