Listens for a wake word and processes a command when it thinks it heard one. Audio processing and storage depend on the manufacturer and account settings.
What data it sends and where
- Speaker → The manufacturer's server: A command audio clip and possible unintended activation, depending on service settings
- The manufacturer's server → Speaker: The answer as speech, and commands for the other devices in the home
- The manufacturer's server → The app on your phone: Recording history and settings, if the service provides them

A smart speaker listens continuously for its wake word. Command processing and recording retention vary by manufacturer and account settings.
Google Assistant can also activate unintentionally. If Voice and Audio Activity is enabled, recordings can be reviewed in the Google Account activity history. Check the equivalent controls in the documentation for other services.
What is unusual about this kind of device
Some services let you review what was saved to the account, delete recordings and set automatic deletion. Not every manufacturer offers the same controls.
When this device is not worth buying
If you are going to put it in a bedroom, or in a room where confidential conversations happen. The microphone switch is a good thing, but it only works if you remember to use it.
