Smart lock
Opens and locks the door from an app, with a code, or over a short-range connection. The access rights and the record of each opening usually travel through an account with the manufacturer.
What data it sends and where
- Lock → The manufacturer's server: Opening events, access rights and battery state, depending on the model
- The manufacturer's server → The app on your phone: Opening the door from a distance, sharing access rights, and the log of what happened
- Phone → Lock: A direct short-range connection, if the model supports it without a network

Remote opening and access sharing for an internet-connected lock may use the manufacturer’s account. Use a unique password and two-factor authentication if the service offers it.
The other half of it is more ordinary. Batteries run out, the network drops, and the manufacturer’s service can be down at the moment you are standing at the door.
What is unusual about this kind of device
A network or service outage must not lock you out. Before buying, make sure the door can also be opened with a key, code or another local method.
When this device is not worth buying
If the lock does not work at all without a network or without the manufacturer’s service. Ask your insurance company what the terms say as well, before you replace the only lock you have.
