Films a yard or room and shows the picture on your phone. Where recordings are stored and how the picture travels depend on the model and its settings.
What data it sends and where
- Camera → The manufacturer's server: Video, the motion detection events and the state of the device
- The manufacturer's server → The app on your phone: The live picture and the recordings, once you have signed in to the account
- Camera → The memory card in the camera: A recording kept on the device, if the model supports it

A camera handles pictures of your home and sometimes sound too. Check the account security, updates, remote access and storage location when setting it up.
Replace any universal default password, turn on two-factor authentication and do not open an unnecessary direct connection from the internet to the camera. On many models the manufacturer’s app provides remote viewing without it.
What is unusual about this kind of device
A recording may sit on a memory card, a separate recorder, the manufacturer’s cloud service or in more than one place. A copy outside the home may survive if the camera is stolen or damaged. Check the retention period and deletion controls too.
When this device is not worth buying
If the manufacturer does not state the support period, account protections or deletion method. Without those details, you cannot assess the camera’s safe working life or control its recordings.
