Baby monitor
Carries sound, and often a picture, from a child's room. A model that connects to the network does it over the internet, and a radio model sends it straight to a receiver.
What data it sends and where
- Monitor → The manufacturer's server: Sound and picture, if the device is connected to the network
- The manufacturer's server → The app on your phone: The live sound and picture, and the alerts
- Monitor → The receiver in the same flat: Nothing but a radio signal, if the model is not on the network
Checklist
Do these during setup. Later, check only that updates continue and the settings still match how you use the device.

Your ticks stay in this browser. They are not sent anywhere, and the list prints without the boxes.
A baby monitor that connects to the network is the same device as a security camera. What differs is where it points and the situation you buy it in.
The EU’s security requirements cover devices for looking after children too, and they have applied since 1 August 2025. In practice you only see them on new devices.
What is unusual about this kind of device
A baby monitor may remain in use for a long time without its settings being opened again. Change the default password, enable updates and check remote viewing during setup.
When this device is not worth buying
If you do not need remote viewing, a radio model can carry the sound and picture without a network account or cloud service.
